At Southview, we are excited to continue our implementation of Standards Based Teaching and Learning in the 2019-2020 school year.  Our staff recognizes the importance of meeting the State Learning Standards, and has developed a plan to gauge each child's progress in meeting those standards.  One of our goals with standards based teaching and learning is to be able to better communicate what each student knows and is able to do based on the standards.

A big difference in our standards based plan versus the more traditional way we've worked is that end of term reporting is designed to reflect individual progress toward mastery of standards.  Things like homework completion, behavior, and attitude are not considered in core content scores.  That being said, we do still recognize the importance at this young age of monitoring those area, and have a section on our report cards for "Tiger Pride Skills for Success."  Progress in these areas is still reported on, but is not reflected in a student's content grade.  Our teachers have been working to develop common assessments that tie to each standard, and will administer those assessments to measure student progress.  Students meeting the standards will move on to the next benchmark or standard, and students who do not yet meet standards will be offered re-teaching opportunities followed by re-assessment to demonstrate mastery.

This year we will begin reporting end of quarter progress using a rubric-based system.  Student reports will show meets (3), partially meets (2), or does not meet (1) for each category on the report card.  Teachers will have a portfolio of student work to show the progress each student is making toward mastery of the standards.

We see this change overall as a big shift in what we know and how we've always done some things, but truly believe it is in the best interest of all our students.  We appreciate support from all the students and families as we go forward, and are open to any comments, feedback, or suggestions you have for us.
