Like most years, there will be many new things happening and changes taking place in the 2016-2017 school year. This will mark the first year where every student will have access to a mobile device/laptop. Technology will likely continue to affect the “how” of teaching, but the “what” and “who” will remain largely the same, and we will have an increased focus on student engagement. This year will be the first (in six years) that we will not start school before Labor Day as part of the FLY (Flexible Learning Year Consortium). While school starts later, that also means that we will not let school out until we’ve spent 175 days with our students. This year will be an interesting and important year as public schools transition from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (also known as No Child Left Behind or NCLB) to the Every Student Succeeds Act (or ESSA). While many things from a state and federal perspective will remain the same, we will certainly see new aspects of educational accountability that we will need to focus on. Finally, two of our district’s major focus areas this year will be finding a solution to our space challenges and overcrowded buildings and also to develop our next strategic plan.
Marshall Public Schools’ current mission is "to develop the potential of each learner for success in a changing world." Continuing strides towards our mission and the district’s current vision "to work as one in the pursuit of excellence” will require collaboration, communication, and commitment. It will take the entire community for our students and the district to be successful. Until our new strategic plan is developed, our mission, vision, and strategic plan will continue to serve as an important part of what we do and how we do it…our roadmap, if you will.
I have so much appreciation of the quality school district that I am privileged to be a part of. The quality and number of opportunities and services offered to students, the positive reputation we have, the exciting initiatives already taking place, a promising future for the district, and the Marshall community in general are all positive attributes of the Marshall Public Schools. I am thrilled, grateful, and humbled to be a part of the district!
I am looking forward to continuing to meet as many people as I can and to do everything I can to serve the district. I anticipate a great year for our students, parents, staff, and residents. If you have questions or want to share your ideas, please do not hesitate to contact me at (507) 537-6924 or email@example.com. Thank you for your interest in our school district.
