Welcome to the West Side Elementary website! West Side houses grades 3 and 4 with approximately 375 students.  The average class size is 22-25 students.  Students are provided with many different opportunities to grow and learn at their pace.  We strive to ensure success for our students by providing quality instruction and a positive environment that promotes learning.  We offer a variety of instructional programs to assist each child in his or her learning needs.  We are honored that you have chosen to allow us to work with your child!

All our students have access to one to one devices at West Side.  Each student will be issued a ThinkPad, and staff will be using these devices as teaching tools in daily classroom activities.  It is exciting to see what our students are able to do with this technology!

This year we move into our final year of implementation of Standards Based Learning (SBL).  Our SBL plan is really focused on offering each student the opportunity to demonstrate understanding of the key learning targets.  Students have the opportunity of re-teaching and re-assessing with learning targets they do not initially master.  This year our end of quarter reporting will be rubric based, to communicate a level of mastery at meets, partially meets, or does not meet standards.
West Side students have a rotation of Physical Education and Music daily, and one day a week each student participates in a full block of Technology class.  In this class, our students learn skills needed to use technology as a tool for learning.

We also offer WIN time, a time built into each day for each student to get "What I Need" in both Reading and Math.  For some students, this will mean additional interventions for success and for other students this will mean added enrichment activities related to the learning targets we are working on.

To be successful in today’s world, all students need to be able to function in an appropriate manner behaviorally and socially.  The primary grades are no exception and provide a sound base for future years.  It is our responsibility to teach and guide students in behavioral conduct and to provide a safe, orderly environment allowing all students to learn. Our Tiger Pride team stresses the importance of Being Safe, Respectful, and Responsible in all areas at West Side.

You are welcome to visit school at any time.  Children love when their parents are able to visit or join them for lunch!   For the safety of our children, we require all visitors to sign in at the main office.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

If you have questions, concerns, or needs, please feel free to call, stop by at school, or e-mail me at jeremy.williams@marshall.k12.mn.us.
