Part 2: Dr. Alyssa Anderson taught the summer school students about aquatic insects. She taught the students what aquatic means and had the students review the characteristics of insects. The students were then able to see aquatic insects in action by looking at the water samples from the SMSU ponds. The students were able to collect the insects in a large sample of water and move them into a smaller dish to see them with a magnifying glass. Dr. Anderson taught the students about the different adaptations the insects have in order to survive in water. Dr. Anderson saved the best for last, by bringing Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches for the students to see/ hear/ and touch. The students enjoyed listening to the cockroach hiss and were able to touch them. The students enjoyed learning about aquatic insects and seeing them in their natural habitat. Thank you, Dr., Anderson for brining in the insects and sharing your knowledge with us! Thanks for swinging by to see what we are up to at Summer School 2026 – Bugs in the Backyard!

Part 3: Summer school students had the opportunity to visit Camden State Park and explore the outdoors while investigating its small wildlife, insects. Students were led by Wild Compass, an environmental education program located out of Lakefield. They were able to walk the trails at Camden and find small bugs under trees, leaves, and rocks. Students loved getting a close look at what they had collected and learn a little bit more about bugs! Wiggle back soon to see more pictures of our explorations during Summer School Bugs in the Backyard 2026.

Summer School students created a DIY bug catcher with Sam Jens from 4H Extension Educator. They were given straws, a film canister, a cotton ball, and tape with the task of creating their own device to catch small insects. They had a blast nicely capturing bugs outside and releasing them back into their natural habitat! Fly back soon to check out more updates from Bugs in the Backyard Summer School 2026!
