Students continued there “Fun in the Kitchen” activities with a tour at the Marshall Hy-Vee. Elementary students learned more about the different departments. Middle School students planned a menu and then had to go about pricing out the different ingredients. Once back at school, they calculated the total cost of their meal and other mathematical problems!

6th graders built boats out of straws and duct tape. Their goal was to build a boat that could float while weight was added to it. In the end, one of the boats held 94 marbles.

Summer school students used their measuring skills to continue some “Fun in the Kitchen” while making SUPER bubbles! They also used their creative sides to make different shaped bubble wands!

Sam Jens, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Lyon County, returned again this summer for more FUN IN THE KITCHEN! Students learned how to make real butter from heavy whipping cream! After some serious shaking, shaking and more shaking, students poured off the buttermilk and had butter. They were able to spread it on saltine crackers and enjoy! It was a fun learning experience for all!

We are launching a new website in the next few days. Due to unexpected issues with our previous site, we have found a website service that will fit the needs of MPS for our community. We ask for your patience during the transition. If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, please reach out to contact@marshall.k12.mn.us

Summer school students were back for more “fun in the kitchen” for another science experiment with Sam Jens, with Lyon County 4-H! Students worked to change a liquid into solid! Students dissolved detergent into warm water, mixed in glue, and went to work forming a sphere! In the end, they had their very own bouncy ball! Students enjoyed interacting with the materials and were amazed at what they created!

Students in summer school are having FUN IN THE KITCHEN! Ms. Stiles, MS FACS teacher, helped students make fruit salsa with cinnamon and sugar chips! Before starting, students used proper handwashing techniques to ensure they were ready to go! After students were taught how to properly use a butter knife, they had to dice strawberries, apples, raspberries, and bananas into bite sized pieces. Other students added butter to chips and sprinkled them with cinnamon and sugar. In the end, all students had the chance to try fruit salsa! It is something students can make at home as a refreshing, healthy snack!

Summer updates are in progress. The Middle school will have brand new floors in the cafeteria and gym. Also, check out the new paint job in the gym!
