Summer school students had the opportunity to tour the Marshall Pizza Ranch! What a great way to have more “Fun in the Kitchen” while exploring industrial sized mixers, measuring devices and more! Students learned about the proper temperature for food safety, the mixing of ingredients, and the steps to make a pizza! In the end, they enjoyed a fun ice cream treat!

Summer school 2023 brought happiness and joy in so many ways! Students worked hard while they were here and had fun along the way! These photos encompass other fun activities students participated in throughout the session: petting zoo at the library, last day of school fun games and making homemade chalk and chalk paint.

Sam Jens, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Lyon County, joined us one final time to make homemade ice cream! After measuring half and half, vanilla, sugar, ice, and rock salt, students took turns shaking their bags to make ice cream! It was a fun reward after the hard work! Students loved having more “Fun in the Kitchen”.

Students were having more “Fun in the Kitchen” … well outside, with kitchen tools! Students used containers of water to determine conversions between cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. They had to estimate each of the conversions then check their math using the water and containers.

Students continued there “Fun in the Kitchen” activities with a tour at the Marshall Hy-Vee. Elementary students learned more about the different departments. Middle School students planned a menu and then had to go about pricing out the different ingredients. Once back at school, they calculated the total cost of their meal and other mathematical problems!

6th graders built boats out of straws and duct tape. Their goal was to build a boat that could float while weight was added to it. In the end, one of the boats held 94 marbles.
