We are one month away from the beginning of the school year - the first day of school is on September 1st for Grades 1-12 and on September 8th for Preschool and Kindergarten!
In an effort to be transparent about the process and how the school calendar is selected let us explain:
It is a state law that school begins after Labor Day, and we generally start the day after. However, with Labor Day being the second week of September, the State of MN passed in legislation that school can begin before Labor Day and after August 31st during the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school years without special permission. The district puts together a Calendar Committee, which includes representatives from each of the following entities: Administrator and Teachers from each of the Public Schools, Department Leaders, Board Member, Education Association President, Parochial Schools Representatives, Southwest Coaches, etc. There are a couple of different options laid out at the meeting and feedback and ideas are brought up and we work to make the calendar work from the perspective of all parties. The discussion for the upcoming school year was that we have two choices - start after Labor Day andthe school year ends in June or start on September 1st and end in May. The committee chose the latter option overwhelmingly. The calendar gets revised and put on the School Board agenda and when the calendar passes, it gets published on the website and sent out to all calendar committee members (generally in March or April).
This year we tried something new and created the exact same calendar with different levels of information. You will notice that the staff calendar is a lot of color categories to communicate to staff the days that they work but don't have students, or no school days that they do not work, etc. The Family Calendar is an attempt to simplify it for parents and guardians so that you know if your students have school, noon release, or no school. That way you don't have to worry about the reason. The Family Calendar is new, and we'd like to hear your feedback as you use this to see if it's worth doing in future years.
